Requirements to become a practicing physician

After finishing medical school, you will need to decide what area of medicine you want to specialize in and apply for a residency training program.  Residency can vary between 2 – 5 years depending on the specialty.  During residency training, you will be paid for your work as you will be involved in looking after patients.  Applying to a residency program can be very competitive.  Therefore, you will need to have a strong application to maximize the chance of getting your program of choice.

After you complete the residency program, you will need to write certification examinations.  If you are successful, you will be able to fully practice medicine in the area of your specialty.
