COMMON REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY FOR A FULL TIME JURIS DOCTOR (JD)
IN THE UNITED STATES:
In the United States, law schools are post-graduate programs meaning that a prospective student can apply only after obtaining a degree from a recognized University. Direct admission after obtaining a high school diploma or its equivalent is not possible.
1. Application
Each applicant must complete all sections of the relevant JD application. The application usually contains a section of questions relating to character and fitness to practice law.
2. All Undergraduate and Graduate School Transcripts
Each applicant must provide all undergraduate and graduate school transcripts reflecting a complete history of your academic performance in his/her undergraduate education and at any graduate schools.
3. Law School Admission Test
Unless a waiver is otherwise granted, all applicants are required to take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and submit a valid LSAT score. An LSAT score is considered valid if you received it within five years of the date of your application.
4. Resume
A detailed resume is usually required containing applicant’s educational history, extracurricular activities, community and volunteer activities, and all full or part-time work experience, indicating precisely the time spent on each activity or employment position.
5. Letters of Recommendation and Evaluations
Two letters of recommendation are usually required. In reviewing letters of recommendation, the admissions committee is looking for insight into a candidate's academic promise, as well as personal qualities such as intellectual curiosity, enthusiasm, and commitment. It is advisable that an applicant submits at least one academic letter (e.g., from a professor, teacher's assistant, advisor) who can offer an informed assessment of the applicant’s academic ability.
6. Personal Statement
The personal statement is an essential part of every application and it is an opportunity to introduce an applicant to the admissions committee. It should demonstrate the potential contribution the applicant will provide to the Law School community beyond simply academics results and should demonstrate the ability to communicate the applicant’s thoughts effectively.
7. Application Fee

In Canada, normally, law schools are post-graduate programs meaning that a prospective student can apply only after obtaining a degree from a recognized University. Direct admission after obtaining a high school diploma or its equivalent is not possible. - For local applicants: Singapore-Cambridge A level: Good overall ‘A’ level results or at least B grade in H1 General Paper, or a good pass in H2 Knowledge & Inquiry (KI); or a minimum SAT Critical Reading / Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 700 accompanied by a minimum E grade for GP/KI
- For international applicants: (Australia) ATAR of at least 90; (Hong Kong) at least four Level 3 Core subjects with a minimum of two elective subjects (CAT A and/ or CAT C subject), and English Level 4; (AQA, Cambridge, etc.) a good pass in at least 3 ‘Advanced’ Level subjects is required for candidates to submit an application. Many applicants submit good passes for 4 or more ‘Advanced’ Level subjects for our consideration; etc.
