It is a common question among students who are ready for university application. We have spoken to a Bearing Academy professional consultant, Sheena Ganatra, who shows us how to choose a business degree.
“What is a Business degree?” – Sheena Ganatra, Chartered Management Accountant, Chartered Institute of Personnel Development member, and a Bearing Academy professional consultant.
After her A Levels study in London, Sheena Ganatra chose an undergraduate degree program in Accounting and Finance at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and finished her summer internship at a large FTSE 100 Bank in London. After graduation, she gained her accounting qualification from a big four and gained international experience from working in London and Dubai, before she completed her Chartered Institute of Personnel Development at a FTSE 100 bank.
Sheena said: “There are two types of business degrees: a specialist type, which focuses in greater depth on a single area of business function, such as Accounting, Finance, Economics, International Relations, Marketing, and Human Resources Management. Students can choose according to their strengths – e.g. good analytical skills and numerical aptitude will be suitable for Accounting and Finance; while sound communications skills, creativity, and digital literacy will be of best fit for Marketing.”
“A generic Business degree, such as Business Administration, or Business Management degree provides a broad foundation in key business areas including Accounting & Finance, Business Organization Skills, Strategic Planning, Entrepreneurship, and Marketing, among others. It equips students with fundamental knowledge and skills that are applicable across industries and sharpens their ability to handle complex business concepts with a solid understanding of business principles. It is a stepping stone for students who show interest in the business world but have yet to discover their special interests.”
“Whichever type you choose, a business degree offers students not only the hardcore skills but also invaluable networking opportunities with faculty, alumni, and industry professionals that can lead to internships, job referrals, and mentorship for launching their careers. The versatility and flexibility of this Bachelor’s degree, supplemented with specialized certification or further education, such as an MBA program will broaden students’ career paths and long-term career objectives.”
According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in the UK, the median annual wage for business and financial occupations in 2021 was £40,881*. It is higher than the median annual wage across all occupations in the UK (£31,461)**. The occupations that fall into this category require a Bachelor’s degree as a prerequisite for entering the job market.”
“At Bearing Academy, we assist students with a comprehensive career assessment to identify their strengths well fitted the modern business world. Our MBA Advisory service offers help to students who wish to gain admission into this highly-competitive post-graduate degree program as a step to advance in this field,” said Sheena.
