Requirements to become a lawyer (Canada)

  • There are 3 territorial and 10 provincial law societies across Canada that are responsible for governing lawyers in Canada
  • Candidates must complete a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) or Juris Doctor (JD) in order to qualify for bar membership in any Canadian province or territory
  • Take the chosen province’s Bar Admission Course and pass the Bar Exam
  • Complete a period of articling in a law firm or other placement
  • Once completed apply formally to be admitted to become a barrister & solicitor in the chosen province/territory
