Requirements to become a lawyer (Hong Kong)

  • In Hong Kong, the legal profession is divided into two branches: solicitors and barristers

 

How to Qualify as a Solicitor

  • A bachelor’s degree in Law degree is required  from a  Hong Kong University  or from recognized program in a common law jurisdiction
  • Obtain a Postgraduate Certificate in Laws
  • Complete a two years of employment as a trainee solicitor
  • Please note: Foreign admitted lawyers can be admitted as Hong Kong solicitors, refer to Law Society of Hong Kong for more information

Qualifying as a Barrister

  • To become a barrister, a candidate must:

                                                               i) holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Laws
                                                               (after the degree of LL.B)
                                                              ii) is a solicitor in Hong Kong; or
                                                              iii) is an overseas lawyer

  • Applicants are required to undertake pupillage for six months in order to be eligible to qualify as a barrister
  • For legal practice, must undertake pupillage for  an additional  six months during  which there is limited right of practice
  • Candidates from overseas must undertake pupillage for  an additional  six months during, which there is limited rights of practice
