What is the legal profession?

You are now in the process of exploring the possibilities of studying law and perhaps to become a lawyer when you finish your studies. There are questions that you may want to ask yourself.  Do you actually know what the legal profession is all about? Do you think TV accurately portrays life of a lawyer? In TV soap operas, lawyers are often seen arguing in the court. This is far from reality.

 

  • Lawyer who specializes in trials are referred to as, ‘litigation’. Litigation  is a small sub-sector of law
  • A majority of practicing lawyers are not involved in court-related legal work
  • Young potential lawyer under the English legal system, need to decide whether they want to be a solicitor or a barrister (specialize in court or advocacy work)
  • In Canada, a lawyer is a barrister & solicitor.
  • In the US, a lawyer is an attorney.
  • Apart from specialties in the profession, law firms come in different sizes and types. On one end of the spectrum, there are large international firms which are divided into many practice groups or departments. On the other end, there are small high street firms with general practices.
  • There are various career paths and various areas of law that one can practice in.
