How to Choose the Right Academic Program at University

2023-05-24

Choosing the right academic program at university can be a daunting task for students. Among a number of prospecting factors to consider, students may also want to choose an academic program that matches their interests.  It can be equally confusing for those who have yet to realize their passion.

We interviewed a Bearing Academy professional consultant, Ms. Cindy Tong who is happy to share her decision-making path for her university study.

“Explore your options before making a decision”  - Cindy Tong, General Counsel and Head of Compliance, AXA Asia, and a Bearing Academy professional consultant

Cindy studied philosophy at the University of Western Ontario, Canada after graduating Form 5 (equivalent to IGCSE level) from a local girls’ school in Hong Kong.

“I did quite well in my IGCSE examination in Hong Kong, yet I had no idea which academic discipline I should pursue in university.   After discussing it with my parents, I decided to take Philosophy as my undergraduate program to explore the topics I might be interested in before making any decision.

The undergraduate training in Philosophy allowed me to strengthen my knowledge and abilities in critical thinking, cultural understanding, and ethical reasoning.  Besides, the study was rewarding and intellectually stimulating which reminded me of my strengths and weaknesses, as well as the extracurricular activities I took part in secondary school.

Before completing my philosophy studies, I was accepted into Osgood Hall Law School, York University in Canada, and eventually received my Bachelor of Law degree from there.  I then decided to return to Hong Kong to pursue my career in law.  I then called to the bar of Hong Kong in 2001, and subsequently practiced cross-border and China investment work.”

“Don’t be afraid if you have not yet discovered your interests by the time of university application, as you can always use your first year at university to explore possible options.   This can be a self-discovery process to personal growth which is worth taking."

"We at Bearing Academy can also assist you with career assessment to identify your skills, values, and interests, which eventually leads to a career or academic program that suits you,” Cindy said.
